The Year 4 Team

We have had a great end to the year.

This Term, students have been involved in many exciting activities both in and out of the classroom.

This term our focus in Integrated Studies has been Forces and Motion. To learn how forces and motion affect movement, we had a special incursion about billy carts.

Students split up into groups and engaged in different activities. The first activity required students to investigate different types of vehicles; another activity required students to race to build their own billy cart. Students also had the chance to use tools and hardware to create their own simple machines.

We also got the chance to visit the Lego Education Centre at Docklands. This was another great hands-on excursion which allowed students to explore ‘Simple machines.’ Students used the iPad to follow instructions and build their own simple machine. They then built their own robot and programmed it to move around. Later in the Term, we learnt about different materials and their properties.

In English, students have enjoyed writing their own narratives. They learnt the structure of a narrative and explored using figurative language to make their writing more interesting. Students had fun learning about descriptive language, using their five senses to describe popcorn. Students also focused on developing storylines, characters and settings. Throughout the term they were challenged to find similes, metaphors and hyperboles in books and add them to our literacy wall.

In Numeracy, students used their problem-solving skills to work out worded problems. Students used their knowledge of the four operations to solve these problems. They were also required to write their own worded problems, which they enjoyed. We also learnt about grams and kilograms. Students enjoyed weighing different items and working out the conversion between grams and kilograms.

In Health, students learnt about being Sun Smart. We had a lot of fun making our informative brochures and taking part in a Sun Smart quiz.

It has been a wonderful year with the students. They have all worked so hard throughout the year and we wish them luck on their new adventure in Year 5.
